Review & Giveaway: Draw Star Wars - The Clone Wars
When I was growing up, some of my favorite 'books' were put out by Klutz. So when the opportunity arose to check out their new Draw Star Wars: The Clone Wars, I was curious too see if the books were still top notch.
The Book
The book is filled with tips and tricks that aim to make you better at drawing. At first I was expecting a howto on drawing various Star Wars characters, however that is only part of what the book offers. There are built-in tracing pages that allow you to trace various characters, with the purpose of getting used to their lines. Draw Star Wars: The Clone Wars also starts with the very basics... right down to stick figures and shapes.
One of the things that drew me to Klutz books as a kid were the included toys & tools, and with this book it's no different... included are 3 double-tipped pencils (think pencils with a different color on each end), a black marker, mechanical pencil, and eraser.
The Good
At the risk of sounding like the nerd my wife claims that I am, when it comes to drawing, I am a Padawan learner at best. It was nice that one of the first pages explained some basic dos and don'ts regarding sketches. Things like "don't hunch over," and "work loose, fast, and even messy."
- Tools - I mentioned it already, but the book comes with the drawing tools you need... and the eraser is a good one, not one of those cheap, worthless erasers that leave your paper in shambles.
- It starts with the basics - Since I function at a stick figure level, it was good to see that stick figures are the basis for everything.
- Repetitive Tasks - It pounds into your head the four steps for drawing characters (stick figure, shapes, basic details, detailed details).
- Nerd Factor - There is a whole section on the differences between the various Star Wars characters and their lightsabers.
The Bad
When I flipped to page 18 and saw Jar Jar Binks, I almost ripped the page out. Who in their right mind would want to draw Jar Jar Binks? Also, the one tool the book doesn't have is a pencil sharpener. In our house, we don't have a pencil sharpener, so in order to sharpen the colored pencils, I'd have to get out my knife and start whittling. Lastly, depending on the age of your child (or you), some of the repetitive tasks will either inspire you to perfection, or cause you to lose interest and flip to the next section.
Overall
If you or your child is in to drawing, or Star Wars, or both, this book would work for you. I'm a fan of Klutz books, and this one is no exception.
On another note, Klutz is also running a drawing challenge that could win you a signed illustration from the books' illustrator, Grant Gould.

Disclosure: I received a review copy of the book at no cost to me. Other than that, I wasn't compensated in any way, or directed as to what to say, or not say in this review.
I try to only review things that I think would be beneficial in some way, so if you think this review is useless (or useful), I'd love to hear from you.

My 4 year old loves to draw (usually pictures of her family) and then tape them to a wall. She knows Clone Wars as... "Your Cartoon Daddy".. (I've watched it once)
I would teach her how to draw them so she can post more of her art to the walls.
Maybe this time Daddy will have a Lightsabre.
I'd give it to my 6-year-old, the second biggest SW fan on the planet (right behind me). : ) Great post, Scott; very innovative!
My kids aren't big enough to appreciate Star Wars yet, so if I won, I would donate the book to our local holiday toy drive.
As I mentioned (in 140 characters) on Twitter, my 4yo daughter is in love with Star Wars, thanks to her 7yo cousin and her two geeky parents who loved growing up on the original trilogy. She can't get enough of Star Wars, and I would like to continue to encourage her drawing skills and love of arts & crafts with this book.
Thank you
Wow, that is pretty cool, less Jar Jar that is. I wish my little man was old enough to really make an effort at winning this. He'd either tear it apart or eat the crayons.
I love the klutz books. I bought the one on juggling a while ago and I another for the yo-yo. I too suck at drawing, but my wife, her father and her grandfather are all artists (which is really embarrassing for me since I suck so bad)I keep hoping my boys take after her and not me. We are massive star wars fans too. This is one of the few reviews I've seen lately that actually interests me. BTW, I like that you wrote the negatives on this product also. Too often bloggers sound shillish about the products they're reviewing. Good that you are not! Cheers.
I would love to win this for my son. He loves to draw. This would be great under the Christmas Tree.
I completely forgot about these books until you brought it up here. IF I had older kids I would sit down with them and practice with them, but mine are young, so I would totally sit down and have at it. You might see my blog posts diminish for short while, or see my posts be about drawing :)
I would give this book to my nephew who LOVES all things Star Wars. It would be a great quiet time activity for him. Thanks.
My son loves Star Wars and drawing, if I win I will give it to him! Thanks!
My 7 year old son loves Star Wars and loves drawing, so I would give it to him. He would love it!
My kids are too young for this type of drawing so I would likely have to hone my own skills.
Hey Scott! My 7 year old daughter loves to draw and my husband has turned her on to StarWars so this sounds cool. As for me, I slept through the last StarWars movie I attended (in the theater), but I do like the original ones...oh, and I can't draw to well, either.
