November 2009
I must admit, when I first saw the trailer for Fantastic Mr. Fox, I was only mildly enthused. I remembered (but barely) reading the book, which is about a fox and his quest for getting chickens to feed the family.
I saw something today that bothered me. In the increasingly tolerant (or so it seems on the surface) world we live in, the ugly face of intolerance came into the light. People were screaming from the rooftops a message of tolerance, all the while harboring hatred in their heart.
Because we are all flawed humans, from different backgrounds, it's to be expected that from time to time opinions will differ. However, there are a few issues that always end in heated discussion... one of which is the sexual preference of cats. Do boy cats choose to keep the company of other boy cats? Or are boy cats more inclined to be tempted by the seductive tail wag of a female feline? Should two female cats be allowed to raise a kitten?
The words "white space" mean different things to different people. To an artist, it signifies the unmarked areas on a canvas. To a radio broadcaster, it means an open frequency. As a father, it can mean something altogether different.
Recently, I had the privilege of hearing Juliet Funt speak. Even though she doesn't live in a van down by the river, she manages to be an effective motivational speaker. One of the things she talked about that hit home with me was making sure that there is plenty "white space," or unplanned time in your day.
When I was growing up, some of my favorite 'books' were put out by Klutz. So when the opportunity arose to check out their new Draw Star Wars: The Clone Wars, I was curious too see if the books were still top notch.
It's been a busy few months around the Simple Father household, and if your life is anything like mine, you've been keeping busy enough chasing kids every which way. I'd like to highlight some posts from September and October that may have slipped through the cracks. While these weren't the most popular, they're worth checking out.
Thank you for reading SimpleFather.com. If you're new to SimpleFather, the 'popular post' section to the right is a good place to start. Thanks again, and without further ado, the September/October highlights:
Early one morning, a diabolical plan was brewing in the mind of Special K. If only she could escape her prison, use her powers of persuasion to control the Queen, and then lop off the King's head, she could be ruler of the kingdom!
But first, Special K had to get the attention of the Queen. This turned out to be much easier than anticipated. As the Queen tried to fully wake from her slumber, Special K let loose her siren's call, which sounded like a mix between a helpless puppy's whimper, and a cat's meow.
The Queen didn't stand a chance, the call drew her in and swallowed her up. Special K took full advantage of the Queen's weakened state and coerced her into releasing Special K from her holding cell.
As I sat watching the World Series, I had an epiphany. Abner Doubleday, the supposed creator of baseball, must have been a dad. The game of baseball is so full of life lessons and parenting advice that there's no way he wasn't a father. Here are my top 5 (I can never seem to make it to 10) parenting tips from the game of baseball:
